Richard Hickock and Perry Smith robbed and murdered four members of the Clutter family on November 15, 1959. Hickock had learned whilst in prison that there was a safe containing a large amount of money in the Clutter household. However, when Hickock and Smith arrived, they soon found that there was no such safe. The family were then bound and their mouths taped shut after Hickock and Smith had managed to rob around $40-50 off the family. The Clutter family were then shot one by one.
Hickock and Smith were sentenced to death and were executed by hanging on April 14, 1965.
